Performance Speed When using the electronic shutter, the V-LUX can shoot up to 50 fps, and up to 12 fps when using the mechanical shutter. Introduction Together with the D-Lux cameras the V-Lux bridge cameras represent Leica’s partnership with Panasonic. The previous model in the range was the V-Lux 4; this was a fantastic 12mp camera with a 25-600 optical zoom lens with a constant f2.8 throughout the full range. With Leica’s new naming method the new camera is just called the V-Lux . . . . with the (Typ 114) identifier. On paper the variable maximum aperture (f2.8 - f4) and the shorter zoom range (25-400) of the new V-Lux camera sounds less impressive. However,  the new camera has a 1” 20mp sensor which has 4 times the area of the old sensor: V-Lux 4 1/2.33” sensor: 6.08mm x 4.56mm V-Lux (Typ 114) 1” sensor: 13.2mm   x 8.8mm This larger sensor not only gives improved resolution and better low light performance, but also a larger effective aperture than that of the V-Lux 4. In addition, the new camera is the first bridge camera to offer 4k video. The sensor itself seems to be the same one used in a batch of successful recent cameras including the Sony RX100III, the Sony RX10 and probably the Canon Gx7. The New V-Lux is a complex camera and fully featured camera, and it’s outside the scope of this report to describe the details in full. However, in addition to the Leica documentation there is an excellent and detailed review of it’s sister camera at Dpreview: The Panasonic FZ100. It’s well worth a read. I’ve been putting the new V-Lux through it’s paces since early in August, including a 2 week trip to Crete (where this article is being written).  In this case I haven’t so much been testing this camera (it arrived in it’s final version) but it’s worth pointing out that, as a tester for Leica, my allegiance is to Leica, and if I find things wrong with the camera, then my duty is to tell Leica about it rather than the world in general. On the other hand, Leica have never had any influence over what I write, and I wouldn’t dream of saying anything that I don’t consider to be absolutely true, or to leave out anything I consider to be a show-stopper The Body Leica has once again employed Audi Design to work on the new V-Lux, so that it has a distinctive Leica look and feel (as well as the traditional red dot). The camera is fairly big - an inevitable result of the the long zoom range, fast lens and the relatively large sensor. On the other hand, despite feeling pretty solid, it is also very light. This means that it is perfectly okay to carry around all day without stress or strain; on several long hot walks in Crete I carried the camera in one hand all day long. I put the camera through a pretty punishing time - high temperatures and a dusty environment. It performed really well throughout. There is a flip out LCD screen which turns in all directions; excellent if you want to use a tripod, it even turns right around so that you can do selfies! The LCD can also be turned back on itself (facing into the body) for protection. The LCD is a 921,000 dot display, whereas the excellent EVF is a 2.4 million dot unit with eye-sensor startup. You can easily turn the LCD off if you are only shooting with the EVF (and vice versa). The sensor based image stabilisation is very effective. I managed to hand hold 400mm at 1/25th on a number of occasions, of course, this doesn’t help with moving subjects, but it means that you don’t need a tripod for the longer focal lengths (tripods don’t help with moving subjects either!). The Lens The lens is a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8 - 4.0/91-146 ASPH (equivalent to 25-400 in 35mm terms). It has a metal outer case and a knurled metal ring for either manual focus or for zooming. There is also a zoom control around the shutter release button (I found this to be faster and more convenient). The lens extends quite a long way when zooming, and the inner cylinder is made of plastic rather than metal. However, it all feels pretty solid. The lens comes with a petal type lens hood which reverses onto the lens for storage.  It’s a fantastic lens, sharp throughout the range and with no obvious weak spots. Ergonomics and Operation As is common with most similar cameras, the controls of the V-Lux are many and configurable. There are 4 configurable function buttons, but almost anything else can be configured within the complex menu system. These controls are thoroughly described elsewhere with respect to the Panasonic FZ1000, and it seems unnecessary to go through them in great detail here. Suffice to say, if you want to do something there will almost certainly be a way of doing it! In actual use the camera is great fun. The autofocus is lightning fast, the tracking seems reliable and quick (not something that can be said of many similar cameras and usually the preserve of large DSLR cameras many times the size and price). The EVF works really well, giving clear information with high resolution; you quickly forget that you are not looking through an optical viewfinder. The shutter noise is virtually silent - if you turn off the camera’s shutter release noise then it simply makes a very slight ‘pop’, excellent for stealthy shooting. Conclusion The bridge camera has always been an enticing proposition but, for me at least, the tiny sensors they have previously employed have always been the spoiler. The wonderful 1” sensor in the V-Lux really does seem to be a game changer (just as it has been in the new Sony cameras). Historically speaking the Leica versions of Panasonic cameras have been a great deal more expensive. However, this seems to be changing. As I write, the Leica V-Lux is selling in the UK for £925 with a 3 year Leica warranty and a copy of Adobe Lightroom V5, whereas the Panasonic FZ1000 is £749. The extra warranty, the Audi design and the copy of Lightroom all combine to make the V-lux rather good value for money. Historically speaking the Leica versions also hold their value much better than the Panasonic counterparts. For many people the V-Lux might be every camera you need. Good for Video and Stills. Good for Macro or Sports, Good for Landscape and Portrait. The fast lens and long focal length makes it quite possible to isolate the subject. The RAW file options makes much post processing feasible and the 20mp is good for really large prints

Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 25x Zoom Lens Pairing with the imaging assets, the RX10 III is most distinctly characterized by its expansive 25x zoom lens. This Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens spans a 24-600mm equivalent focal length range, and has a variable maximum aperture of f/2.4-4 for adept performance from wide-angle to super telephoto. The optical design incorporates five extra-low dispersion elements, two extra-low dispersion aspherical elements, and one Super ED element to control a range of chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity and color accuracy. An advanced aspherical (AA) element and five aspherical elements are also featured to reduce spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and resolution. UHD 4K Video Recording Internal video recording is possible in a range of resolutions up to UHD 4K30 as well as high-speed recording in Full HD 1080p at 120 fps. Recording is done using full pixel readout, without pixel binning, in order to avoid the occurrence of moiré and jaggies, and the fast readout speeds of the sensor help to avoid moving subject distortion due to the effects of rolling shutter. Both 4K and Full HD recording is possible in the 100 Mbps XAVC S format, which is contained within an MP4 wrapper, with 4:2:0 color sampling when recording internally, or 4:2:2 sampling with the use of an optional external recorder via HDMI output. The potential downside to this is that the cancellation function brings with it the greater possibility of moiré and other color artifacts. EOS Scene Detection System with RGB+IR Metering Sensor The EOS 5DS R camera has the iSA Intelligent Scene Analysis system that employs an independent RGB+IR light sensor with approximately 150,000-pixel resolution. This sensor enables Canon's Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system (iTR AF) that detects and tracks subjects, automatically switching the AF point to optimize tracking. With new tracking algorithms tailored to recognize faces and colors, this system serves as the foundation to the camera's AF system. 61-Point High Density Reticular AF For fast, precise AF with sophisticated tracking performance, the EOS 5DS R camera has an advanced, 61-point High Density Reticular AF system with up to 41 cross-type AF points. The AF system is sensitive to changes in composition, making adjustments quickly to help ensure consistent, sharp AF. A new RGB+IR AF sensor (with approximately 150,000 pixels) monitors subject motion, and Canon's iTR Intelligent Tracking and Recognition system synchronizes the active AF point with the subject's motion, helping to ensure that AF precision is maintained. With focus modes dedicated to the particulars of the shooting environment, the EOS 5DS R realizes a level of focus accuracy befitting its 50.6MP sensor. Advanced Mirror Control Mechanism and Shutter Release Time Lag The camera shake that occurs from the impact of an SLR's mirror can leave blurred details in the recorded image. This effect is magnified when working with a high-resolution sensor like the one found in the EOS 5DS R camera. To counter the effects of conventional, spring-driven SLR mirrors, the EOS 5DS R features a newly developed Mirror Vibration Control system. The camera's mirror is not controlled by springs but instead is driven by a small motor and cams. This system suppresses the impact typical of the camera's mirror, significantly reducing impact and its effects on the image. A new Time Release Lag setting, easily accessed on the menu system, offers added protection against camera shake by setting the shutter release time intentionally longer so the camera does not begin the exposure until after the impact of the camera's mirror has diffused. Anti-Flicker Feature With Canon's anti-flicker function, the camera is able to deliver accurate results under cycling lighting situations. Under flickering light, such as fluorescent lighting, a fast shutter speed may result in an irregular exposure. The anti-flicker function detects the frequency and phase of the flicker and captures images near the point of peak brightness when the subject is most likely well illuminated. 1.3x and 1.6x Crop Shooting For still photography, the EOS 5DS R features the flexibility of a cropping feature that extends the shooting effect 1.3x and 1.6x. With 50.6MP capture, cropped shots are possible with resolution to spare. Images recorded at 1.3x (APS-H) are approximately 30.5MP (6768 x 4512) Large/Fine JPEG, while images recorded at 1.6x (APS-C) are approximately 19.6MP (5424 x 3616) Large/Fine JPEG. Particularly useful in extending the range of telephoto lenses, the crop function also improves the subject tracking capability with almost the entire frame covered with AF points. Image cropping can be displayed in the viewfinder either masked or overlaid with an outline showing the cropped area, and in Live View shooting the image is cropped by the effect chosen. Aspect ratios can also be defined, with the EOS 5DS R shooting in 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9 ratios, in addition to the default 3:2. Full HD 30p Movie Capability The Canon 5DS R supports full HD 1080/30p movie capability and Time Lapse Movie function, which takes still photographs at set intervals and combines them into a full HD movie file, is provided. In addition HD and VGA resolution, numerous frame rates and ALL-I and IPB compressions are supported. Still images can be captured during video recording. A jack for an external microphone is provided. Built-In Intervalometer and Bulb Timer The EOS 5DS R offers time-lapse fixed-point shooting and long exposures without the need for a remote control. The interval timer takes from 1 to 99 shots at pre-selected intervals (from 1 second to 99 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds, or unlimited), ideal for shooting flowers as they bloom or clouds drifting through the sky. Captured exposures can even be collected and saved as an HD movie. Its built-in bulb timer keeps the shutter open for a designated amount of time, perfect for night photography, to capture the flow of traffic on a street corner, or any other situation where long exposure photography is warranted. 3.2" ClearView II LCD Monitor The 3.2" ClearView II LCD monitor has 1,040,000 dots, anti-reflective construction and features Canon's ClearView technology for a bright, sharp display in any number of shooting situations. It's ideal for reviewing settings and images, as well as for shooting in Live View mode. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections, 24 sections, or 9 sections with diagonals, as can the electronic level. For image review, the camera has a dedicated Magnify/Reduce button for zooming in or out (up to 16x) simply by pressing the button and turning the Main Dial. Images can be protected or erased quickly, individually or in batches, and slideshows can be created with some or all images and can be sequenced by date, folders, movies, stills or rating. A clear and simple feature guide found in the camera's menu provides detailed reference information whenever needed. Intelligent Viewfinder II The Intelligent Viewfinder II makes it easy to both shoot, change and confirm camera settings and shooting modes all without looking away from the viewfinder. Displaying approximately 100% of the composition, the viewfinder can show settings like shooting mode, exposure level, white balance, drive mode, AF operation, metering mode, recording format, an electronic level and more. All of this information can be displayed by or superimposed easily over the image for review while shooting, and multiple views are customizable through the camera's simple user interface. Customizable Quick Control Screen In addition to a conventional Quick Control screen, the EOS 5DS R camera features a Quick Control button that enables the photographer to easily access the settings critical for the task at hand. The user can specify features to display, as well as their location and size on the screen.
